Choosing Fabric and Materials to Make Your Own Futon Covers
66
Experienced sewers, who already own a machine and tread, can make new
futon covers for less than $10. Not only is this far less than the cost
of a store bought cover, but it also allows for a greater range of
colors and patterns than those that are commercially available. Making
your own covers is easy, whether or not you are experienced. Before
undertaking this project, which should only take a few hours depending
on your skill level, there are a few things that should be considered.
First, choose your fabric carefully for futon mattress covers. Some plans recommend that you work
with sheets that are sized to fit your futon mattress. While this will
allow you to use materials that you may already own, sheets are
generally quite thin and may be subject to premature wear. Instead, opt
for the heavy canvas that is available at most fabric stores. This will
last for a long time and is often one of the cheapest fabric options
that they carry.
As canvas is often used for pattern making, you
may feel that your color choices are limited. However, dying canvas is
easy and inexpensive. By following the instructions listed on the box
for the brand of your choice, you can usually create a true version of
your favorite color in just a few hours. Before you begin sewing, it is
best to put the fabric through the washing machine. This will help the
dye set and ensure that it will not rub off onto the mattress or those
that are sitting or sleeping on the futon.
If you will be using a
heavy canvas, make sure that your needle and thread is sufficiently
thick to do the job. Using too thin a needle could result in a bent or
prematurely dull needle. Thread that is too thin may not adequately
support the seams, which may cause splitting.
With the right
fabric and tools, anyone can make their own futon covers. Visit Home and Garden Co for more information on futons and other home related topics.

I made a futon cover out of upholstery fabric and it came out great. It is a little thicker fabric and more durable.
