Choosing and Caring for Flannel Sheets

Flannel sheets are warm and cozy to sleep on in the cold winter months. Their warmth and comfort make it a pleasure to get into bed on cold nights. To get good value, it is important to not only buy good quality flannel sheets, but to also take care of them properly, to insure that they last a long time.

Flannel sheets are generally available for all sizes of beds, from cribs and twin size beds all the way up to king-size flannel sheets. You can purchase them either separately, or in flannel sheet sets. A flannel sheet set is often preferred to maintain a coordinated look. However, some people choose to purchase sheets separately, especially if they are replacing one worn sheet, if the rest of the bedding is still in good condition.

Flannel sheets can vary widely in regards to quality and cost. While it can be tempting to try to save money by buying inexpensive flannel sheets, this is not always the best value for the long term. High quality sheets last longer, and are generally more comfortable to sleep on. When selecting flannel sheets, those made of heavy 100% cotton are the best choice. Thread count does not factor into flannel sheets, and instead you will need to refer to the fabric rating. By choosing a flannel sheet set that has a fabric rating of five to six ounces per yard, you will be insured of not only their warmth, but also their durability and longevity. High quality sheets are tightly woven, which means if you hold a sheet up, you should not be able to see through it easily. You also want to look for "yarn dyed" material, since sheets that are made with this type of dying process will hold their color longer than printed coloring. Another thing to remember when purchasing a flannel sheet set is to take your type of mattress into consideration. If you have an extra deep or pillow top mattress, you will need to make sure to purchase deep pocket flannel sheets.

It is very important to care for flannel sheets properly. Never use hot water when washing flannel sheets. Use a gentle laundry detergent to help preserve the color of the sheets, and use liquid fabric softener or dryer sheets to keep flannel sheets comfortable and soft. Use a medium to low dryer heat setting, and remove the flannel sheets promptly from the dryer to avoid wrinkling.

There is nothing better in this world than having a crisp, clean, white set of flannel sheets on your bed. Thanks for this great info on how to care for them.
