Dog Kennels: How to Choose One That Will Suit Your Pet's Needs

Whether you have an inside or outside dog, you probably need a dog kennel for your pet. However, there are differences between what constitutes a suitable kennel for an outdoor dog as opposed to an indoor dog.

When shopping for dog kennels and runs for outdoor usage, you need to focus heavily on whether the dog kennel will provide your pet with adequate protection from the elements. Your dog will need protection from the cold and heat, and a dry place to sleep. The kennel should have a raised floor, which will give extra protection from moisture, which will keep your dog more comfortable and reduce the chances of mold and insects. Ideally, the dog kennel should have a hinged or removable roof, for ease of cleaning. The kennel should also be watertight so that your pet and the kennel bedding stay dry.

You also need to take your dog's size into consideration when selecting a dog kennel. Remember that you do not want to cramp your dog too much, but on the other hand, if it is too large, it will not provide adequate warmth for your pet. If your dog is large, a large dog kennel and run should be provided. There should be enough space so that the dog can have room to rest, as well as room to move around easily. Outdoor runs are generally larger, and provide more room for movement and exercise. Indoor kennels are almost always smaller in size, but they should still provide enough room to move around comfortably.

Dog kennels and runs should always be located in an appropriate area. Outside dog kennels and runs should be ideally located in an area that provides some protection from the elements, including shade from the blazing sun. An outdoor run is generally made from chain link fencing, which is sturdy and safe for your pet. Indoor dog kennels are sometimes made from plastic, but these are often easily damaged by a dog, especially certain breeds or a dog that is prone to chewing or digging. Wire and chain link indoor kennels are also available, which cannot be damaged by your pet.

There are many places that have dog kennels for sale. When shopping for a dog kennel, remember that there are many standard options available for an affordable price. If you have some particular needs, you will also be able to find custom kennel options, but of course these will be more expensive. Still, if a custom kennel provides the best solution for your pet, it might be worth the price.

I once built my own kennel or my dog, unfortunately I wasn't very good at carpentry and it didn't last long! Don't think it was quite big enough though, wish I had read this hub first!

I have one of the wire kennels that was purchased off Ebay a few years back. It has worked great for my chocolate lab, and the price was very reasonable.
