 There are a number of ways that anyone who is trying to get pregnant can improve their fertility.  Fertility, in the most general sense, refers to the ability of a man or woman to contribute to the conception of a child.  Couples are considered infertile after they have been actively trying to conceive for more than a year with no success.  Through many people think that these labels are static, that is not the case.  There are a number of factors that cause infertility, many of which can be addressed and corrected.  For anyone who is trying to get pregnant, even if they are just starting, there are a number of things that can be done that will boost a couple’s fertility.

      It is common knowledge that smoking while pregnant is not a good idea.  In addition, most doctors agree that smoking while trying to get pregnant can be equally detrimental.  Men who smoke tend to have significantly lower sperm counts than non-smokers and women who smoke have higher incidences of infertility as well.  Both men and women will see drastic improvements almost immediately after they stop smoking.

      Changing the diet of both partners may also increase the changes of conception.  Multiple studies have shown the benefits of an antioxidant rich diet for general health, and studies now show that the correct amount of antioxidants will also increase the chances of conception.  It can be difficult for working couples to eat well, so talk to your doctor about over the counter vitamin supplements that can help.  Obesity can also contribute to infertility.  Even a small percentage of weight loss can have a huge impact on fertility. 

      Though the connection is less well-established, anecdotal evidence is mounting that stress and a lack of sleep can harm the chances of conception as well.  Though stress is unavoidable for most people, couples who are trying to conceive should do everything possible to find ways to relax.  While you may have little control over stress in your professional life, make time for your hobbies on weekends or in the evenings.  Some women take up yoga, begin taking walks with their partner, or may just find some time to take a long bath. 

      If fertility issues persist, couples should schedule a joint appointment with their doctors.  There are a number of medical reasons for infertility in couples of all ages.  A doctor can help you determine the causes of infertility and council you and your partner on the best ways to proceed.  In the early stages, most treatments for infertility are non-invasive and have been shown to work for many people. 

      It is so important not to get frustrated if you have been trying to get pregnant to no avail.  There have been an astonishing number of advances in fertility medicine in recent years, and more and more couples who have been told there were infertile are having successful pregnancies.  One of the most difficult, but most impactful, things that any couple can do is to remain positive.
